Hail Mary Mallon is a rap duo comprised of underground darlings Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic, who display an expansive vocabulary and mind-bending lyrical prowess on every track they produce.
"Whales" is the third single from the group's sophomore album, Bestiary. The entire record presents humanity as its own Animal Kingdom (and food chain), from tiny Krill being swallowed up by the thousands, all the way up to Whales, a term used by salespeople and casino pit bosses to identify people of considerable means.
On "Whales," the two take aim at the money-obsessed hip hop tracks that have become a mainstay of the genre, making increasingly ludicrous claims of wealth. "Whales" was instantly one of my favorite cuts on Bestiary, an album full of quality tracks.
Then they released the music video for "Whales," and HOLY SH*T YOU GUYS. Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic are hobo puppets rapping about being ridiculously rich, and-- you know what? Just watch the video.
